10 years of NESSC! We can look back on a pleasant and successful final edition of the NESSC Days, held on Thursday 11 and Friday 12 April, 2024, in conference center Kontakt der Kontinenten in Soesterberg.

NESSC Days have aimed from the start to bring together the NESSC community in a welcoming and small-scale environment where the diverse, multidisciplinary research of NESSC can be can be shared, discussed and celebrated – and this final edition at Soesterberg saw plenty of this. The former Cecilia chapel, situated in a separate building on the conference grounds, formed the lofty backdrop of the diverse set of presentations.

We also enjoyed key note presentations of two eminent climate scientists: prof. dr. Corinne Le Quéré (Royal Society Research Professor of Climate Change Science at the University of East Anglia) and prof. dr. Eelco Rohling, Professor of Ocean and Climate Change – who has joined Utrecht University this month!

With presentations from scientists of all the different research themes, the event further occasioned a glance back on the still growing legacy of ten years of high impact NESSC research. In that same vibe, we had the pleasure of welcoming back a number of alumni who also gave a presentation or joined the audience.

Of course there was also space to relax and unwind, with researchers enthusiastically joining archery or yoga sessions after the presentations had wrapped up. With a bonfire in the evening, pleasant spring weather on the final day, and a group picture of all present at the end, the event was graced with deserved pride on the achievements during the past years and a positive outlook towards the future, looking beyond NESSC.
